Injury Recovery Is More Than Physical

BEFORE INJURY

  • Promote balance. Make sure your child gets enough rest and recovery time, especially during intense training or tournaments.
  • Talk early. Explain what opioids are and how pain should be managed safely, even before an injury happens.
  • Build a support plan. Know who to call if something happens: doctor, trainer, mental health counselor, etc.

DURING INJURY

  • Be present. Attend appointments, ask questions, and advocate for your child’s physical and emotional needs.
  • Monitor medication. Store prescribed meds securely, track usage closely, and never let your child manage them alone.
  • Look for emotional shifts. An injury can feel like a loss. Watch for changes in mood, sleep, or withdrawal.

AFTER INJURY

  • Help with reintegration. Ease your child back into school, social life, and sports at their pace.
  • Dispose of medications safely. Find local take-back programs or ask your pharmacy how.
  • Encourage self-expression. Let them talk about their journey. Journaling, music, and conversations all help.
