Injury Recovery Is More Than Physical
BEFORE INJURY
- Promote balance. Make sure your child gets enough rest and recovery time, especially during intense training or tournaments.
- Talk early. Explain what opioids are and how pain should be managed safely, even before an injury happens.
- Build a support plan. Know who to call if something happens: doctor, trainer, mental health counselor, etc.
DURING INJURY
- Be present. Attend appointments, ask questions, and advocate for your child’s physical and emotional needs.
- Monitor medication. Store prescribed meds securely, track usage closely, and never let your child manage them alone.
- Look for emotional shifts. An injury can feel like a loss. Watch for changes in mood, sleep, or withdrawal.
AFTER INJURY
- Help with reintegration. Ease your child back into school, social life, and sports at their pace.
- Dispose of medications safely. Find local take-back programs or ask your pharmacy how.
- Encourage self-expression. Let them talk about their journey. Journaling, music, and conversations all help.
